The Nagoya University Foundation Support Association

Greetings
Shoichiro Toyoda, President, Nagoya University Foundation Support Association

Since its founding in the 19th century during the early years of the Meiji Period, Nagoya University has grown steadily to become one of Japan’s key universities. Through outstanding research achievements as represented by its six Nobel Prize winners, as well as the accomplishments of its approximately 100,000 graduates active across various fields, the University contributes broadly to society.

Amid rapid progress in globalization and innovation, Nagoya University faces increasing demand to further enhance its international competitiveness and to play a supportive role in Japan’s progress.

This is one of the reasons the Nagoya University Foundation was established in 2006 with a fund raising goal set at 20 billion yen, rising from the recognition that the University was in need of independent sources of funding. At present, the Foundation is making progress toward its goal of 20 billion yen by the 150th anniversary in 2021, and the returns on investment have been used for our students’ scholarships and international exchange programs. Future plans call for providing support in a wide range of other areas as well, including human resource development and the promotion of state-of-the-art research.

Now, under the leadership of the President Matsuo, Nagoya University is moving forward with initiatives aimed at furthering itself as a world-leading research university, underpinned by state-of-the-art research and human resource development, the promotion of internationalization and expansion into the Asian region, and contributions to innovation through industry-academia-government collaboration. We view the successful fulfillment of the Foundation’s goal of 20 billion yen as necessary in supporting the realization of these objectives. At this time I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the kindness extended so far by our graduates, the business world, and our numerous other donors, though I must sincerely request once again for continued wide-ranging support and cooperation from both our current and future donors.
